Ubuntu are shipping software that old?! Even Debian (sid) has 3rc-20070708 at the moment. Are you sure you haven't forgotten to apt-get update first? Hint: download and build from source. I managed it with ion2 on Solaris a couple of years ago; if I can do that you can manage it fine on Ubuntu. Oh, and read the FAQ http://modeemi.fi/~tuomov/ion/faq/entries/Reporting_bugs.html :) Removing all Gnome software on a Ubuntu box should be fun. Presumably installing xdm (how do you feel about kdm, Tuomo?) and writing a simple .xsession (mine has one line: "ion2") is good enough to eliminate any side effects of Gnome just for testing that the bug is real?
