Thanks for that information.

I am an emacs user and like the major mode concept of emacs. You can
have different major modes with different key bindings.

It would be really nice, if ion supports major modes for different
applications.
What are the problems with this functionality for the user interface,
implementation, or whatever?

There are already different keymaps. The major mode keymap would be
located in front of the other maps.
