Hello. Following on from kostja's [1]thread, I think it would in fact be useful to be able to grab plain buttons. For example, MS Intellimouse Explorer buttons 6 and 7 ([2]here's how to set them up) do nothing in the vast majority of programs, and I'd love to be able to use them, without modifiers, as wm controllers. It is occasionally possible to have both hands off the keyboard :-)
