I think this: >> Don't you think that those who actually waste their spare time on >> this project at least deserve to be asked about their opinion before >> a decision is made? > > One would think. Plus this: > I want to drop a general note and I say I think a lot of thinking is > spent in this list about 'surface' things while no much is going on > code-wise. Pretty much sum it up. Is using SVN somehow hamstringing coders from writing and contributing? Looking at how many people like git on the mailing list seems like forcing a switch to hg would just invite drama. Everyone tolerates SVN right now but moving to hg/git seems akin to starting a PC/Mac religious flamewar. Is there something that SVN can't do that's really holding stuff back, or is it change for change's sake? Is it being switched because Ryan is moving to hg for SDL? Or is there some other compelling reason, too? There are other things that seem to have been mentioned that would have a greater impact to the project like a rendering system revamp (yay), my personal favorite getting the visual studio project file to some type of feature parity with the makefile to attract more VS-only programmers, or other practical stuff that zakk's mentioned like a website revamp and collecting content for a possible ioq3 standalone package for people to play with instead of being forced to use q3 or OA. The only impact for me, personally, will be that I will have to learn a new tool and modify the how-to's in the forum and on the wiki, but I have to question why the urge to switch from SVN. If it ain't broken, don't fix it? I don't have a vested interest in or preference for either git or hg; I just don't understand the logic behind switching a working VCS just for the sake of switching it.
