Doug:

There are a couple of places that can affect the system sounds.

(1) First, check your Mute switch (on the side near the Volume buttons). Make 
sure it is not showing orange. Mute does not mute everything, and might give 
unexpected results.

(2) Go to Settings app > Sounds. Near the top you will see "Ringers and 
Alerts." You can change the volume right here. You can also turn On the feature 
"Change with Buttons," which will allow you to increase or decrease the alert 
volume while you are looking at the Home screen using the volume buttons.

(3) Also in Settings > Sounds -- Scroll all the way to the bottom. You will see 
two On/Off settings for Lock Sounds and Keyboard Clicks. Set them "On" so that 
you can hear the clicks.
