Are you using VoiceOver? I can reproduce similar symptoms with VoiceOver: If I use the index to scroll to a letter, then swipe back to get to the list, and the first entry of a different letter will be highlighted. Alternatively, if I select 'headings' with the rotor, and then swipe through, the headings get highlighted in a seemingly random order.
I suspect it's a bug that Apple will need to fix in an update, unfortunately. Jamie.
