I have seen similar things on both iPhone and iPad.
I attribute it to changes Apple is making in the iCloud infrastructure.
I’ve also seen times when I have to repeatedly authenticate to iCloud.
Other apps as well have “lost” my password and I had to re-authenticate.
I would guess it has to do with the very tight security certificate control
and the fact that whenever an app is automatically updated (on for me) that
it has a new certificate rev and has to re-establish its secure presence.

Other theories?
