Is there a way to install foreign language dictionaries on iOS 8 without using the Manage Dictionaries option in iBooks?
We are trying fix a problem with a friend’s iBooks on iOS 8.1 where French and Italian dictionaries are in limbo. Prior to updating to iOS 8.1, the dictionaries were working find. The icon to the right of the dictionaries that are in limbo a circle. Not a cloud icon indicating the dictionary can be downloaded, and not the red-circled “x” icon indicating the dictionary can be deleted. Instead, it’s the pencil-thin circle that appears just before it begins to animate the download - as it thickens in blue until the download is complete. Not sure how to solve the problem. One solution mentioned online is to download some other dictionary, and in doing so, it will trigger any dictionary downloads that were stalled in progress. But that didn’t work. I’m wondering if there’s another way to install foreign dictionaries on a system-wide level independent of going through the iBooks app. I know that these dictionaries, once installed via iBooks seem to be available in Mail, for instance. But is iBooks the only means to installing them? I searched the User Guide for iPad / iOS 8 and couldn’t find anything. Thanks, Kevin
