Since similar things happen when you try to charge two different devices, 
perhaps the problem is with the cable and/or the USB port on your iMac.

I suggest you try charging using the little charger “brick” that came with your 
iOS devices, and see if they will charge that way.

If that still doesn’t work, try using a different cable.
