Closing the loop on this. Thank you for the helpful suggestions. I tried
every one of them and nothing helped. I checked the warranty and they were
still covered by Apple. I called Apple, they agreed there was a problem and
replaced my right AirPod. It was quick and painless and took only a minute
or so to re-pair them with my iPhone, etc.
