Ok, look at it this way:
There is no way for the device to sense when the user has their
finger hovering above the screen. The actions you can have trigger
events are touches (mouse clicks), and swipes (complex Javascript
events to capture). (Group, help me out if I missed something)
Well, i'm pretty sure that one day, a crazy fool will use facetime
camera to detect your fingers movements above the screen :)
but for now, i see no way to do it neither...

That's not working here on desktop (safari 5.0.2 under Leopard)
On the iPhone the only two pseudo elements are :link and :visited;
there is just no other way to interact with the browser.
Aren't :active & :focus supported too? (no time atm to test)
