Don't know if this helps or not but I once read (and tested), in one of the mobile safari dev books that an mouseover event on mobile safari would emulate this if the mouseover caused the page content to change. The example I used was a rollover tooltip div that showed and hid with mousover on desktop. On mobile safari when you touch the link the first time it would show the tooltip. The second touch of the link would do the regular click and follow the link.
