Got a SuperMicro system, X7DBR-E with AOC-SIMSO+. (yes, it's one of these
nifty Woodcrest dual-dual systems.)
But not a Mac Pro? ;)
While installation of Debian took some time (no vanilla kernel has support
for the new Gilgal gigE chip), I was able to connect to the IPMI card,
using ipmitool 1.8.9/cvs on my laptop.
Firmware version of the IPMI is 00.10.00 build 3458 (pre-beta???).
Some features showed up:
. CPU2 Temp B has no reading
. 1.5V sensor returns 3V (beyond the thresholds)
. trying to read the BIOS entry fails if the box is off
This may actually be a good thing since it likely means it is actually quering the BIOS (via SMI or other) and not relying on static data.
. if I plug in power for the first time, chassis power on doesn't work (if the
system had been powered on for a short time, and switched off by ipmitool
or power button, it works!)
The chassis power commands may be routed to ACPI state changes which may fail to work until it is pulled out of S0 the first time.
. 'chassis poh' returns random nnumbers going up and down
. 'bmc guid' timestamp is in the future (2012) - this seems to be a common
problem though as my Opteron box (H8DAR + 1UIPMI) shows the same
. 'fru print' does return empty serial numbers (board & product) - same with
Opteron
They might have (or should) a tool for updating FRU, at a minimum the asset tag but often serial numbers and such. Of course this can also be done with the right IPMI commands (or bridged I2C commands to an SEPROM) but they aren't implemented directly in ipmitool since FRU writes can be dangerous.
. 'chassis status' shows "power button disable: allowed" and "power button
disabled: true" - nevertheless it works (fortunately...) - these disables
are not available on the Opteron
I have not seen one of these that works yet, though there is an additional IPMI command for configuring front panel lockout that may be interesting.
