I haven't seen connection drops when using SOL to watch a system being installed (via FAI), but I have seen the console log getting "out of sync" several times (lots of non-printable characters from the upper 8-bit half). Somehow, the log got into sync again later... Coould this be related? BMC and eth0 (tg3) shared.
