Thanks to Garrett and Don for the suggestions. Unfortunately, neither of them worked. While I was sitting with the hardware though, I did manage to get it to work eventually. As expected it was really weird and nothing to do with ipmitool. In the BIOS configuration, under "Advanced" -> "I/O Device Configuration", there is an option to set the "Embedded Serial Port Mode". By default, this goes to "System". The only option here which actually works is "BMC". With all other options, the console on ipmi is read-only. Only downside of this is that now the physical serial port of the machine points at the BMC console, and not at the system UART. Now that SOL works however, I can live with that. So this smells a lot like a firmware issue. Looking at the HP firmware updates, the "Embedded Serial Port Mode" option is reasonably new (like my machine) and if someone from HP reads this post, it may well disappear in a future version. :-) Best, - Philip -- Philip Paeps Calm down ... it is only ones and zeros phi...@freebsd.org ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Increase Visibility of Your 3D Game App & Earn a Chance To Win $500!
