I know, and I myself run a BIND caching server on my laptop, but my
point is that "not so unheard" does not mean "common configuration".

Hmm, perhaps I was not clear in the reply to Margaret (I should have
read the entire thread before replying to the first one...).  We
actually implemented this way; we support the ability to specify the
"default interface."
