Use Separate Ports for Separate Applications.
Web=80
FTP=21
SMTP=25
POP=110
IM=5177 and 5178 or what ever you set it to use.

Best to Practice the BestWay.

A firewall does care what type of data is being sent through ports. ie:
udp/tcp

An open port is just that.. 'open'

I too agree that the IM Server should not be fixed to use a specific
port. It should allow the admin to setup multiple ports if needed. They
should also allow for the client software to connect via proxy.

Am I missing something? A firewall does not care what data is being sent
through a port correct. An open port is an port regardless where or how
it's being used. You obviously couldn't use the same ports on one
machine say a webserver that is using 8080... IM couldn't use 8080 on
the same machine put if you have two different machines they both could
use port 8080 for different roles (one machine could us 8080 for web and
the other machine could use 8080 for IM)

I'm just saying that it would be nice if we could control what port we
use on our individual setups. Instead of being forced to use 5177 and
5178

Why would a firewall allow those ports if they were not already in use?

Any word on if IM will be able to run a different ports in the future?
Being able to run on ports like 8080 or 8383 will make it easier for
those to connect that can not change firewall settings to allow 5177 to
pass through. Many firewalls already have 8080 or 8383 open. Or this
would allow the client to adjust the settings as needed per
installation. Greg
