Quite. It's idiotic. And if I was a paranoid mail operator, I would
put in some heuristic code to identify such dummy names and treat
them as if there was no PTR record, since they do nothing to actually
validate the source in any real way.

Rulesets like fqrdns exist for exactly that purpose.
