I've seen a 1200 node LAN with it, with 4 x IPv4s /24s on top of it, proxy arp, and nodes with /16 masks to allow Netbios Name Lookups to work without having to have a Netbios Name Server. At 10MB of broadcast traffic every 25 minutes, it was ugly. Or was your 'LAN' running PPPoE? I've done that too, and that was quite reasonable. I'm confident you wouldn't be able to scale IPv4 a single IPv4 subnet over such a 'LAN', but with MLD enabled switches and IPv6 you might be able to.
