I was in seventh grade, third period English class at the time. An office helper came into the classroom with a stack of papers, handed one to the teacher, and left. She glanced at it briefly, and then dashed across the hall to the office, apparently to confirm that the message was true. She then came back and read it to the class.
School was let out a couple hours early that day. Just after lunch as I recall. Needless to say, everyone was quite sad. KJR ran organ music instead of the usual top 40. I don't recall how the other local stations handled the situation.
