Kevin, The top of the case has a recessed dimple which encircles and presses down on the center hub of the thumbwheel. An effort has been made by Sony to lubricate with grease this area of contact. Perhaps a little trimming here would help. Costs have been cut in the tuning department as Karl Zuk has commented it appears to be a nylock tie strap with teeth in it acting as a toothed "rack" to move the indicator bar. The thumbwheel is geared to mesh with the rack. I made a simple ferrite rod "loop" antenna from a Bytemark 4" long, .5" od mix 61 ferrite bar with close wound 165/46 litz wire over the center for about 2". It's connected to a small bcb Jackson Bros. air variable. It is enclosed in a 5"x2"x2.5" plastic Radio Shack project box It will boost an inaudible signal comfortably audible. I sit my "Big Wheel" 59 and the ferrite loopstick on a plastic turnable from Bed Bath and Beyond. It's a fun set up. I've heard several TA hets on it, but no cigar. It's been weeks since I've heard audio on a TA on my Drake R8B here near the GA coast. 73 Gil _______________________________________________ IRCA mailing list [email protected] http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca
