Back in the early 80s, the band was a lot different too. 1010 was
clearer as I heard and QSL'd the old KLRA-AR. 
  1040 China used to be a HUGE powerhouse. Some estimated their ERP
towards Japan, as they ran FS in JJ often, as 8,000 KW. Probably some
highly directional pattern. Anyway, one morning in the Wnter in the
early 70s, I was talking to Dave Williams on the phone as 1040 was very
strong. Anyway, a bit later he had to go to work. I did not have any
college classes that morning, so I stayed around. Well, I lost the audio
after 1845 UTC, and the carrier at nearly 2000! In those days nothing
was on 1040 in the West. I think WHO was the closest station other than
Hawaii. Ah the good ol' days.
