Hello All,
Anyone seeing the ultra-tiny Sangean DT-180V for the first time is
almost guaranteed to have an "SRF-59 moment," or in other words, "How can
such a
tiny radio possibly be capable of serious DX?"
The DT-180V is in one of the newest classes in the white-hot Ultralight
competition... the cigarette lighter sized group, unofficially termed the
"Ultralighter" class. Its direct competition is the Sony SRF-T615, and both
of
these units are ultra-small, ultra-capable, and unfortunately...
ultra-expensive. The Sangean offering will set you back $47.98 (Amazon, with
free
shipping), but the Sony SRF-T615 will run you $89 plus shipping (Audio Cubes).
This very tiny radio class is the current focus of the white-hot Ultralight
competition between Sony and Sangean, and both of these mean little units will
be fully covered in the 2008 Ultralight AM-DX Shootout.
Sangean's cute little DT-180V comes in a white cabinet, and is a
whopping 3.5 x 1.8 x .6 inches in size. It has some serious DX features,
however,
with 9 or 10 kHz steps on AM, 5 AM memories, a decent FM-stereo section with
surprisingly good audio and sensitivity, and TV channel 2-13 audio coverage.
As a headphone-only unit, the DT-180V can get extended run time from its
single AAA battery, and it has a battery indicator, 90 minute sleep timer, and
deep bass boost circuit.
How well does it perform in daytime DX? Well... that subject will be
extensively covered in the 2008 Shootout. Let's just say this... in late
December, the Sony SRF-T615 was able to receive JOAK-594 weakly during a night
of
modest propagation, but the DT-180V is still looking to cross the "big pond."
73 and Good DX,
Gary DeBock
