The Passport to World article states that taking swipes at the E1 has become
an online bloodsport but the early problems were resolved, etc. Written
like a well-paid Eton advertiser. Unfortunately the sale by Circuit City
dumped a lot of early models on the public this Xmas season and these "old"
problems have surfaced anew. A buddy and I took advantage of the sale and
each bought the E1XM from CC at great prices. Within the first hour, mine,
serial no. 27xx, inexplicably locked up and other than on/off, no controls
worked. The problem eventually cleared up after ten minutes of button
pushing (no, this wasn't the deliberate "lock" button feature). The next
day it did the same and back it went to CC for refund. I ordered another
immediately as the price was too good not to. That and a 1 year warranty
with Drake service if necessary. Second radio, an earlier serial number,
5xx, works fine. My buddy had intermittent audio on MW depending on how the
radio was held (bad solder joint or internal connector most likely
aggravated by slight board flexure) and a check list of shortcomings. His
went back to CC as well, but by then, the CC stock was gone. It is a feature
rich radio, a great performer and I'm glad to have it.
