The closer you get to the ground the more directional a wire will be. I
know when my Eastern beverage was 4 feet off the ground, it was more
directional on many frequencies than it is now at 10-12 feet off the
ground. But it seems to be more directional at the lower end of the band
than it used to be, maybe dealing with the wavelength.  However, the
gain of the wire drops as you get closer to the ground too. The beverage
now is hotter signal-wise.  Where you may need 1,000 foot beverage to do
a good job off the ground, a BOG, you may get by with 250 feet instead.
That is true that 150 feet of wire between a couple of trees is
basically a randum wire, but even at 150 feet may show some directional
properties. At 300 feet, it will be a bit more directional, but still
pretty wide off the end, but a BOG of 300 feet will be quite
directional.
