Or, maybe not. I took my 2M HT with me on a trip to the Islands in 2000. We were on three islands (Big Island, Maui, Kauai, not counting the obligatory Oahu stopover), and I tried a number of repeaters, but never heard any activity, and CQs from VE3JF/KH6 went unanswered. I guess all the locals were either working, or at the beach! When I returned to Hawaii (Big Island and Molokai) last February (good timing - just before our dollar and savings plummeted!), I didn't take any radio gear except an old Sony ULR - not used much, though I did quite a bit of listening on our car radios - mostly for local tunes, though.
