Harold,

You were experiencing what sounds like RF overload.  This occurs when an
extremely strong signal gets into your receiver and it appears on
frequencies other than the one it uses to broadcast.  I remember when I was
a kid in the 60's when I had a Panosonic am/fm portable where this overload
was a daily unwelcome visitor.
