It wasn't exactly a Victoria-like session, but freakish auroral conditions brought the first Australian DU audio to Puyallup in 8 years. Audio showed up on 594, 792 and 828, although they didn't cooperate to provide parallels. The SSB spotting receiver had them all nulling to the SW, however, leaving no doubt of their origin. Around 1152 in the predawn darkness 738-Tahiti managed its best signal ever here, with good-level French speech rising above the KCBS splatter in the freakish conditions. Things stayed pretty quiet until around 1345, when a pattern of Australian big gun heterodynes started showing up on 594, 702, 774, 792, 828 and 891 (plus a mystery DU heterodyne on 603). None of them were very strong until about 1356, when 594 broke into audio with music. Scrambling around for an LR network parallel proved fruitless, as 702 and 828 were in dives at the moment. When 594 sunk into the noise just after 1400 the carrier on 828 broke into weak audio, again without any LR network parallel to check. Finally 792 broke into fairly strong audio with exotic music at 1407, almost certainly from 4RN but (you guessed it) without 576 in audio to confirm a parallel. 891 also had a strong heterodyne around 1412 but finally sank into the noise without reaching audio level. Although there was a weak carrier on 1575, no Asian station managed any audio at all during the session. Obviously if the Australian signals were strong enough to manage audio in this "DU-dead zone," it must have been a fantastic morning in Victoria. 594 (Probably 3WV) Weak music at 1357 nulling to the SW direction; no LR network // available for confirmation https://app.box.com/s/8jgpc3cmt4ts3ftzzsje0nh834a63j10 738 Radio Polynesie Mahina, Tahiti French speech dominating over KCBS splatter at 1152; its best signal ever here https://app.box.com/s/n57r87f4v3gsp09gcw1pztlcdfdoouug 792 (Probably 4RN) Exotic music at good strength at 1407, but no RN network // available for confirmation https://app.box.com/s/5rzom7sxu2xemqc44potk111h18uv3hy 73 and Good DX, Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA, USA) 7.5" loopstick C.Crane Skywave Ultralight + 15" FSL antenna _______________________________________________ IRCA mailing list [email protected] http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca
