That's nothing particularly new - the debate between fencers who fence side-on 
and full-front has been going on for decades.  The Italian school has tended to 
emphasis standing side-on for the reasons outlined by Colm_F, while the French 
school has always encouraged a 'squarer' stance.  If you look at the 'photo of 
the challenge match between Lucien Gaudin and Aldo Nadi in the 1930s, you can 
see this quite clearly.  Now that we have to fix the point on the target for 
longer - more like steam foil way back when - the debate has been rekindled.  I 
seem to remember that the French school has always argued that a squarer stance 
is less of a strain on the sword arm and the neck of the fencer, and is thus 
easier to sustain over a period of time, which makes fingerwork a little easier 
to do, as the sword arm is more relaxed and less tired.  There are probably 
other reasons for and against, but at the end of the day I think it just boils 
down to a matter of style.
