Hi all, > Year numbers are very comfortable.
That's true, with the disadvantage that there fits only one year in a
year, and I have the impression that the recent naming discussions were
mainly influenced by the motivation to keep the current year number free
for the last release of a year.
In my opinion the »major« and »minor« distinction is rather
indiscriminate. I would associate that »minor« releases guarantee some
backward compatibility, which is definitely not the case in the Isabelle
tradition (e.g. AFP entries are shipped for a certain release, not »runs
on Isabelle from release … to …«).
Spontaneously I would argue that we should continue with year numbers
but use the -n suffix for distinguishing different releases in a year
without any reference to an obscure »major« and »minor« distinction.
Cheers,
Florian
P.S. :-)

8 months :-}.
I'm sure nobody would have had a mind a product line like Isabelle –
Natasha – Priscilla – Sonya…
