Pada tahun 1951, berlaku krisis adat dimana Biro Hal Ehwal Ugama UMNO Rembau telah menentang peraturan adat tentang tanah pesaka yang dianggap bertentangan dengan hukum Islam. Mereka yang menyokong peraturan berkenaan dianggap sebagai melakukan dosa dan akan bertanggungjawab kepada Allah pada hari kiamat nanti. The memorandum claimed in addition that persons abiding these (constitutionally upheld) conventions were by definition guilty of sin (dosa ) and could not obtain absolution through "the recitation of pious formulae."
