I see a problem here, in the methods these local governments in Indonesia employ:
Indonesia has been a predominately Islamic country for a few centuries, relatively new when it comes to Islam (except in places like Aceh, where it is much older). Out of ignorance, the Indonesians usually mixed Islam with their own previous polytheistic practices, creating what is called a "folk-religion".
It is excellent that more and more Indonesians are becoming more religious Muslims, and instituting Shari'ah is wonderful. Al-Hamdudillah!
But I also caution that a quickness to institute Shari'ah, without first educating the people who are in need of such, could very well create a backlash against Islam....which must be averted. I simply feel that these governments should exercise a little caution before going head-first in instituting Shari'ah upon a people who are not very religious.
However, I have never been to Indonesia and the evidence I gather is from books. So I could be wrong. And Allah (Subhanahu wa-Ta'ala) knows best.

Suhaib Jobst
