INTERNET Risk UPDATE for 03-29-2002
ISS X-Force Internet Threat Intelligence Center

www.iss.net - Click on AlertCon logo for more information.

********************************************
ALERTCON 1 today
Projected: AlertCon 1 through Monday
********************************************

ALERTCON 1 - AlertCon 1 reflects the malicious, determined, global,
24 x 7 attacks experienced by all networks. AlertCon 1 risk means that an
unprotected system running common software will be compromised within 24
hours after connecting it to the Internet.

Internet Explorer: Microsoft has issued a cumulative patch that addresses
two recent critical vulnerabilities.

Telnet: We have received recent reports that a new exploit for the telnet
daemon on the Linux platform is circulating. The exploit purports to be a
remote root exploit for Linux.

CISCO: CallManager v3.1, a Cisco proprietary application, has a memory leak
in the CTI (Call Telephony Integration) that may allow an attacker to crash
the server by initiating a Denial of Service (DoS) attack.

VIRUSES/WORMS: WORM_CERVIVEC.A propagates by sending a copy of itself to
all of the infected user's ICQ contacts. Its non-destructive payload
displays worm-like lines in the screen of the infected system.

FACTOID: A Gartner Group study says it's likely that two out of five small
and medium-size businesses (SMBs) that experience a disaster will go out of
business within five years because they lack adequate disaster-recovery
plans. Up to 65 percent of SMBs globally lack a disaster recovery and
business continuity plan to deal with crises--such as industrial sabotage or
fire--that can seriously disrupt service, according to the report.
