I've installed SP3 into my test environment with the following caveat:
You must open a command prompt in the patch directory (C:\sql2ksp3\MSDE) and enter:
Setup /p /upgradesp sqlrun
If your SA password is blank, after this line you must type in:
BLANKPWD=1
If it is not blank (and you know it shouldn't be!!) after sqlrun and a space, enter
Securitymode=1
This worked for me.
