No SQL repro, you are right. addReusableObjectInternal deep copies the converter through Java serialization, and that recursion runs over the nested ValueWriter tree. On JDK 17 and 21, default 1 MiB stack, a MAP<STRING, ...> column nested 240 deep already fails to plan with a bare StackOverflowError in deserializeObject, while convert called directly still succeeds at 1500. ToVariantConverter.create has one caller outside tests, ToVariantCastRule:169, so that deep copy is always on the path. It needs a column: CAST of a typed NULL literal folds to null:VARIANT before the cast rule runs. Repro for FLINK-41257 if useful. -- This is an automated message from the Apache Git Service.
