This wasnt finished as many of the previous comments show and so shouldnt
have been merged yet.
I raised another PR to include some of the additional changes that were to
be included. Alas the ship has sailed on the comment about not yet removing
code that perhaps should still be used and is seemingly pointing out a problem
exists.
