Advancing the watermark later could work; as you pointed out, it avoids
creating additional bundles.
I've modified the PR to ensure a finished bundle upon checkpointing. That
avoids creating an additional bundle in case of a normal bundle finish. I'll
merge these changes to fix the checkpointing. Feel free to take the issue over
afterwards.
