[~julianhyde] I think that refactor/generalization of the unknown handling
should be done in a separate ticket; I would be intrested in looking into it...
after CALCITE-2314 it would be probably safer to do...since it adds a lot of
checks.
Are there any more things which are needed to be done before this ticket could
go in?
