Recap:
 [PR#1788|https://github.com/apache/calcite/pull/1788] proposes a solution for 
the current ticket which:
 - a) does not break backwards compatibility
 - b) it is in any case flagged as "Experimental"

At this stage, if no-one objects within three days, I'll assume lazy consensus, 
commit it and move this ticket as "Resolved".
