It seems that the attached patch fixes the speed issue.

I'm not familiar with java.io that much.  I thought just switching to 
java.io.BufferedOutputStream would be sufficient, but I had to use flush() or 
it broke things.

Hopefully someone more experienced can translate this patch to a more correct 
way of handling the issue.
