This is partially implemented now in AggregateSummaryStatistics, but I agree it
would be better to have it implemented by the statistics themselves. I would
prefer the name "append" for the aggregating method to be consistent with what
we have used elsewhere. Also, it should be typesafe, so if we do define an
interface to signal it, we should parameterize the interface with the type of
the stat.
