It's easy to reproduce. I used the example: "Sending HTML formatted email" :

And include the jars:
commons-email-1.3.1 .jar
geronimo-javamail_1.4_mail-1.8.3.jar
and used the JDK7

that works perfectly.

exchange the commons-email-1.3.1.jar with 1.3.2 or 1.3.3
then the result is the plain HTML source code.

If i use the mail.jar (JavaMail) all works fine. But the apache openejb use 
geronimo.
