@MaxKellermann - the only thing I would suggest is we fix the NPE at least. It's better to leak objects than to blow up. I've been checking my code... I have a million places where streams are closed in a different thread so unless the NPE is fixed, I can't use 2.8.x. And I'm pretty sure there's many people like that.
