from a cursory test i did it didn't work.
i'm unfortunately starting to feel that between local files, app manifest, and
nsurlprotocol (i'll even give them that last one architecturally), the lack of
these critical features feels aimed squarely at hobbling native competition. i
don't even get why app manifest would have been problematic.
