I did some testing with SQL Server 2014.
The above query works. I also tried this query (the value has precision 37):
select cast('9999999999999999999999999999999999999' as decimal(38,0)) from
data
I can store this value in a table with decimal (38,0) and a table with decimal
(37,0).
