OK - given there seems to be consensus on this, I'll do the following:
 # Check that the last commit on each release branch matches the tag
 # Assuming this is the case, I'll delete the release branch
 # Rename the release tags to follow the same naming convention (x.x.x)

Hope this is OK... otherwise there's some "restoring" that will need to be done
