Please try adding `|| echo ""` after `awk '{print $1}'`, like in this
example:
```
set -x
set -e
set -u
set -o pipefail
PIDS=$(jps -vl | grep java | grep -i QuorumPeerMain | grep -v grep | awk
'{print $1}'|| echo "")
if [ ! -z "$PIDS" ]; then
echo "killing" $PIDS
else
echo "not killing" $PIDS
fi
echo "DONE"
```
