shuttie commented on issue #10358: [FLINK-14346] [serialization] faster implementation of StringValue writeString and readString URL: https://github.com/apache/flink/pull/10358#issuecomment-561671471 @StephanEwen the only issue with this approach is that the internal binary representation of Strings between jvm8 and jvm9+ is different, see the [JEP-254](https://openjdk.java.net/jeps/254) for the details. So then you will loose the compatibility between JVM versions, that's why it's called Unsafe :)
