Nice, thanks for helping out with this.
I would start with replacing the deserialization from {{byte[]}} with
{{DataInputDeserializer}}.
There should be only one instance of the {{DataInputDeserializer}}, which is
always reused by {{deserializer.setBuffer(bytes, 0, bytes.length)}}.
