[~trohrmann] From the discussion here it seems that we should discuss it in the
ML as we have multiple options and some of them may be breaking users' tooling.
In addition, I would consider it a small feature and not a bugfix for 1.12.
This is why I have not opened the discussion in the ML yet. Also depending on
the solution that we will go with, I am not sure if I will be the one working
on it. This is why I have not assigned it to me.
